Frequently asked questions

How much topsoil do I need for grass or sod?

For a new lawn, plan 4–6 inches of topsoil. To top-dress an existing lawn, use about 1/4–1/2 inch. 1,000 sq ft at 4 inches needs about 12.3 cubic yards.

How many bags of topsoil are in a yard?

27 bags of 1 cubic foot, or 36 bags of 0.75 cubic foot, make one cubic yard. Above 2–3 yards, bulk delivery is usually cheaper.
